Shot Breakdown

I made a table to include every shot I expect to take when I film the video. However, it isn't completely accurate as there are very long takes that I have left to fill in during my editing. It is in order of the timings for the video but won't be filmed in this order.

Actor in Video Introduction

The actor who will be starring in my video is 17 year old Tara Banahan.

I have chosen her because she is at a point in her life where she relies on music as a getaway, just like my target audience would do so. As well as this, my target audience will be able to relate to my video and message more if they see that there is someone of the same age and general 'situation' as them, instead of a supermodel who looks unrealistic to my viewers.

Digipak Development

Logo/Font
I like this logo and font together because it's simple but effective. There isn't too much happening, e.g. loads of different colours and images, and so it's not overwhelming to look at.

As well as this, the simplicity means that I can be flexible with designing and adapting the logo to different digipaks and songs. This means that the brand image can be maintained with the same logo instead of changing it every now and then.

Images
For the pictures on my digipak, I had an idea to use the instruments in the shed which the girl finds at the very end of the video. I like this idea because it puts an emphasis on the music and reflects what the artist is about.
And then an idea for the back of the digipak/the track list was to take a picture of the shed where the instruments were found. Then the list of the other songs on the EP would be listed on top of the picture.

The only issue with the idea of the track list is that the array of different colours may end up making it difficult to place the words on top of the image and so I would have difficulty completing the digipak and making it effective.

If this problem did occur then I had another idea to simply have no image and use a blank background to put the track list on top. This would work in the sense of the audience being able to read the track list properly, but it might not match the digipak as a whole and end up not looking effective enough for my audience.

This is a very rough draft of what I imagine the first idea for the track list to look like. As I said before, the large range of colours on the image make it difficult to read the font which may put off my audience from looking at and being interested in the digipak and artist.

I am still going to do some photography similar to this design so I can see what it turns out like and make a judgement from there.

Inspiration

For my actor in the video, I like the idea of her reverting back to her old, more comfortable self as opposed to the version of herself which is enforced upon by her pressuring parents.

This is to represent a side of this generation who are unable to be themselves due to something stopping them from doing so, e.g. society's unrealistic expectations of certain audiences. This video is a girl breaking free from that and doing what she loves because she can and will.

Music Video Treatment

U L T R A V I O L E T
directed and produced by rosie lawrence

Basics:
The general idea for the video is that there's a girl who is not who she wants to be and has an exterior forced upon her by someone, e.g. a parent. She goes out for a walk whilst enjoying her music before remembering her love of music rooting in the instruments in her shed and so she runs back to discover that they're still there.
Digipak Ideas:
Front cover - the instruments in the garage
The tracklist - the garage/shed she goes into
Band featured on the inside sleeve and back of the CD bit
CD can just contain the logo of the band itself

Costumes:
Video
To begin with, girl smartly dressed with smart shoes, blazer etc. neat hair (in plaits?) made to look like a 'good girl'.
Girl in a band t-shirt/any t-shirt and black jeans, hair is down and messy, not really caring as much as before.

Digipak (artist)
Leather jackets
Boots
Black jeans
Plain t shirts

Location:
A park/empty green field (Upper Basildon)
Bedroom
House
Shed with instruments

Potential Props:
Drum kit
Guitar
Bass
Hairbrush or mircophone
Phone
Headphones
Boombox (with title of the song?)
Amplifier
Cloth

Style/Mood
The video is supposed to show the fun side of music, the side which everyone hides because it's deemed embarrassing to dance around to your favourite song in public.
For a majority of people, including my target audience, music is a valuable form of escapism and makes one feel a little less stressed about their lives and so the video portrays that feeling of just letting go and having fun for once.
The style of the video will be quite saturated in order for it to be somewhat relaxing to look at; the big bold colours of life can be quite overwhelming at times so the video needs to provide that escapism for my target audience.

Song Choice

For my video, I have chosen to do the song "Ultraviolet" by a local band from Reading, The Amazons.
I have chosen this song because not only it fits the indie/rock genre I was going for, it's sound is very visual and easily goes along with my new idea of a girl pretending to play the parts of each band member in her back garden shed.

It goes along with my new idea because the song itself is very upbeat and instrumental which is important in this setting. As well as this, the lyrics of the song match the theme of my video idea; some of the lyrics read "don't you wanna see inside my shell?" This is saying that there's more to a person than what you can physically see; if you look a little closer then you'll be able to see a person's true colours, and this is what my video is about. It's about not caring for other people's opinions and being yourself with every aspect of your life, from what you wear to the music you listen to and so on.

I messaged the band themselves and they said that I can use this song for my video.

Logo/Font Design

I designed multiple logos for my digipak and artist and asked a large group of people who were of the target audience requirements which logo and font did they prefer out of the following:

Out of the five I designed, the top left was the most popular with the font and logo next to it. Therefore, this will be my logo for my artist and the font will feature on the digipak as well as the magazine advert.

Artist - The Symbols

The Symbols
The new artist for my video idea is going to be a four piece indie band from Reading. They are an indie-rock band who are trying to be a voice for their generation of lost thoughts.

I have decided to create a band instead of a solo artist because it is more fitting to my chosen genre of music and so it is more conventional and is likely to appeal to a broader audience.

Throughout the duration of my artist profile creation, I asked my target audience what they thought of each element. Here are my results.

The Symbols
Four-piece indie rock band The Symbols consists of four talented members;

  • Jackson Price, lead singer, rhythm guitar
  • Lily James, lead guitar
  • Zane West, bass
  • Samuel Earl, drums.
The band originated from the garage of Price's house when him and best friend James were working on a cover of "Mr Brightside" when Jackson's two friends overhead and thus the band was formed.

Influenced by the likes of Circa Waves, Sundara Karma, Catfish and the Bottlemen and The 1975, the indie-rock genre came naturally to them as they quickly began to produce their own music and release it.

This song, "Ultraviolet" is the first official single from their debut album "Behind the Doors". The hype is through the roof for the release due to the mass following The Symbols seemed to have accumulated through their SoundCloud and YouTube days.

Comparable Artists
  • Sundara Karma
  • Catfish and the Bottlement
  • The 1975
  • Wolf Alice
  • Peace
  • Circa Waves
  • Nothing but Thieves
Magazines The Symbols would feature in
  • Q
  • NME
  • Clash

Typical video from The Symbols
Usually a video with performance elements from the band themselves. Something with a narrative for the audience to follow as they watch. There are always underlying tones of aspirational messages, e.g. the "Be yourself" theme in the Ultraviolet music video.

Artist Fashion/Style
  • Band t shirts
  • Ripped jeans
  • Black boots/converse
  • Denim or leather jacket
  • Authentic jewelery, e.g. rings, necklaces
  • Plain t-shirts

Music Video Change

After emailing multiple different manor and country houses for my location, I have decided to change my music video idea due them all declining my request to film there. This has left me without a location for this idea and since no other locations will fit the narrative I had planned properly, I have decided to change the video.

My new idea is going to be a lot simpler and a lot easier. The basic idea for it is that there's a girl who trapped in a personality that has been forced upon her by her parents. She leave the house wearing whatever she wants (ripped jeans and a t-shirt) and just walks around her village with her music, being herself throughout.

This idea is better as it is more fitting to my audience research in the sense that the song is an indie rock song and is produced from a band; a more common convention than a female solo artist in the particular genre. As well as this, the location is very local and so filming here will not be an issue, like it was previously.

Digipak Inspirations

Inspirations
For my digipak design, I like the idea of having actual artwork as opposed  to photography because I think that it gives me more freedom to design the digipak as well as it suiting the song more. For example, I particularly liked the artwork for the song Sam Smith and Disclosure did for the song 'Omen'.

Inspired from this, I think that I'll either design artwork for the entire digipak or incorporate photography and hand drawn designs together so it's layered for a 3D effect, much like the Disclosure style they've been maintaining recently.

For potential photography, I will use the artist for the front cover. It will most likely be taken at the location of the filming to maintain the link between the song and the video. This picture will also be used for the magazine advert since a common convention of magazine articles is that the photography/artwork is that of the album artwork. This is so the audience don't get confused and are more likely to recognise the one image instead of multiple images.

I Walk The Line Lyrics Analysis

Artist - Jules

I have decided that, because the song I've chosen is sung by a solo artist, my artist is also going to be solo artist. This makes it easier for my target audience to identify with the singer and therefore makes it more appealing.

In the making of my artist, I asked my target audience what they thought of each element and made them choose the artist. This is the end result.

Jules

My solo artist is going to be an English 20-something female who found fame on YouTube and Sound Cloud when she posted covers and original material onto both accounts. Then, she was founded and quickly signed to Capitol Records where she is to complete an album, 5 singles and a tour.

My artist's name is Alice Green but is known by her stage name, Jules. The name was chosen when she originally posted her songs onto YouTube in an attempt to hide her identity from her peers but when she was picked up by Capitol Records, the name stuck.

Motives:
Inspired by the lack of female artists in the indie genre, Jules decided to create indie pop music which people can enjoy as much as they would if she were a male. As well as this, music has always been such a huge part of her life since it's helped her to cope with situations, such as her parent's split. She wants to be able to create music for someone's escapism which helps them through tough times in their lives.

Comparable artists:

After doing some research, I've concluded that the following artists are comparable to mine
  • The 1975
  • Verite
  • Twentyone Pilots
  • Banks
  • Melanie Martinez
Magazine's you'd find Jules in:
Q, Elle, Local Wolves, NME; a mixture of fashion and music.

Typical video from Jules:
Jules is likely to create a performance video with a mixture of narrative and concept elements due to her creativity. Music is her outlet and so the video is a platform in which she's able to portray her lyrics and music visually, and so it's likely to be be a bit of everything.

Artist fashion/style:
Dark lipstick, ripped clothing, black or other dark dresses, trousers/jeans, simple t-shirts. Unlikely to wear branded clothing/accessories for no other reason then tainting her brand image of basic clothing and fashion style.

Chosen Song and Video Direction

For my video, I have decided to use the song "I Walk the Line" by Halsey.

I have chosen this song because it's very visual and so there are many different directions which the video could go. Upon listening to it, I immediately thought of multiple ideas for the music video which means that it's a flexible song.

As well as this, the song itself fits the indie pop genre I was aiming for, so it's likely to appeal my target audience and be successful. Then, upon asking my target audience which song they preferred, almost all of them said that this song  since it would work well with the genre since it's a mixture of indie and pop.

I decided against the other songs, partly because my target audience chose this one over the others and so it has a higher chance of success, but mainly because, as I said before, it's a very visual song. The video could go in so many different ways and not just in filming; after filming I could be able to experiment with the editing, e.g. have it in black and white, use slow motion etc. There's a lot of freedom with this song.

For the video, I have been inspired by the music video for Blank Space by Taylor Swift in the sense that Swift herself stars as the main character and lives in a fancy house with fancy clothes and has an attractive 'suitor'.

Like in Blank Space, we see the video from the artist's of view so that the audience sees what she feels in relation to the song. The song itself has lyrics which could be used to visualise a one sided relationship between the artist/main character and her interest, for example, "I find myself alone when each day is through,".

The video will follow the artist as she performs the song and interacts with/dreams of her love interest. There will be several locations, including a house and a swing in which the artist will sit on and sing the song.
