Digipak Name

In the midst of designing my digipak for my artist, I came up with an idea to rename it "Burning Nature" instead of "Trouble" (the name of the song). I made a rough copy of what it would look and sound like and when I asked my target audience what they thought of the name, 60% of them preferred the name of the digipak to be "Trouble" since it's the name of the song and fits better with the artist name.

Therefore I will be calling the digipak "Trouble," since it is what my target audience prefer and since it is more fitting to my theme.

**Costume and Props Plan

Costumes
I decided on the costume of simple black jeans and a white top for the piano scene as it’s simple but effective. It tones down the whole video from a slightly unrealistic representation of who the singer is to the girl whose heart has been broken. This again makes her more relatable as an artist to her audience.
As well as this, the chosen colours could be a metaphor for her good and bad sides, the good with her on the piano and the bad with her vengefully burning the photograph.

For the other scenes for the narrative, I've decided on another natural look of a black top with denim jeans. I want this costume for similar reasons as the decision for the first costume; it makes her seem more real. Instead of the viewer’s seeing her as a superstar, they see her as a real person and can find her and her music more relatable.

Props
The main props used in this video will be:
1.     Piano
2.     Photograph
3.     Lighter
The minimal use of props puts more of an emphasis on her and her music again. Instead of the song being about things, it’s about emotion and feelings. This is shown through the piano, normally quite an emotional instrument used to portray deep feelings, and the lighter which symbolises the end of their love.

Digipak/Video Inspiration

I was looking at digipaks and found this one which is for the band "Satellite Stories" for their song "Vagabond". I really like the use of a female on the cover with a shadow of a city on her back.

I could use this idea for my own digipak or music video and instead of using an unknown actor, use the artist and have her face the camera instead with the faded image of a burning picture layered on top.

Record Label

I have decided that the record label my artist Jules is signed to will be Capitol Records. This is because it is a broad music record, signing a wide variety of artists from Halsey to Bastille to Coldplay. This allows for my artist to be more flexible with her music and style.

As well as this, Capitol Records are known for allowing their artists to start up their own record labels with Capitol. This is beneficial to my artist as she would be free to start her own music and have control over her career.

Aritst

I have decided to use my original artist for this idea, so I'll be reverting back to the name "Jules" for this video. However I want to change the font and style of the digipak/magazine advert so I'll develop it so it matches the new song.

Here's a brief recap of Jules.

Jules
My solo artist is going to be an English 20-something female who found fame on YouTube and Sound Cloud when she posted covers and original material onto both accounts. Then, she was founded and quickly signed to Capitol Records where she is to complete an album, 5 singles and a tour.

Comparable artists:
After doing some research, I've concluded that the following artists are comparable to mine
  • The 1975
  • Verite
  • Twentyone Pilots
  • Banks
  • Melanie Martinez
Magazine's you'd find Jules in:
Q, Elle, Local Wolves, NME; a mixture of fashion and music.

Typical video from Jules:
Jules is likely to create a performance video with a mixture of narrative and concept elements due to her creativity. Music is her outlet and so the video is a platform in which she's able to portray her lyrics and music visually, and so it's likely to be be a bit of everything.

Shot Breakdown

Call Sheet

Location**

Location
I have decided to have my location in this rural area at a friend of mine's house as it puts an emphasis on her feeling of isolation that is portrayed in the song.

I chose the piano scene to show that it's only her and her piano in this room she's in; she completely immerses herself in the music and I really wanted to put that emphasis on her in that way.

Then for the bedroom, I decided on this as it makes her look vulnerable in this location since she’s at home where she can be herself and not put on a front to people. This makes her anger and hurt more realistic as she isn’t surrounding herself with people.

The location of the video itself is at the artist’s house. This makes her character seem more real and therefore the audience can find her far more relatable in these circumstances.

Video Change

I filmed my video for "Ultraviolet" on the 28th November 2015 according to the call sheet and plan I had produced. However, throughout the duration of filming, I had encountered multiple problems, which lowered the quality of my content.

The main issue I had when filming was that my tripod I tried to use was wonky and I wasn't able to straighten it out so that the frame was straight. This meant that it looked unprofessional and I would be unable to use the shot.

As a result of this, I had to use another tripod I had. This was a success for the pans and still shots. However, when I tried to move with the camera on the tripod, the shot was very shaky and wonky and did not look good, so I turned to holding the camera in my hands.

This initially worked for the tracking shots when I was following the actor. Yet when the camera was the actor following the camera, it was incredibly difficult to produce a shot that wasn't shaky and badly done.

This means that for a majority of the footage I obtained that day, it's shaky and wonky and looks unprofessional; with a few particular shots it is apparent that I am holding the camera and am taking steps since the camera moved with my footsteps. This disallowed for smooth shots and would make a low quality video.

Another issue I encountered was the weather; throughout the day, the sun would sporadically come out and disappear behind the clouds. This meant that for some of the shots, the exposure is very bad and you can't see the actors face while other shots aren't so bad. This also meant that the lighting wasn't the same throughout the video when I wanted it to remain roughly similar for the duration of the video.

Finally, when I watched back the footage, I found that there wasn't really any continuity to it and that it didn't really make sense. On paper, it seemed like a perfectly good idea that worked out but in reality, it was a bit muddled and this would have confused my target audience.

As a result of all of these issues I had encountered, I have decided to refilm my video with a different idea.

This idea consists of a girl playing her piano along to a song when, in the middle of the song, she receives a phone call from her boyfriend who calls to break up. She is heartbroken and realises that he has been cheating on his girlfriend with her. The video will end with her burning the only picture she has of them together and walking away from it.

This will be done at a cosy location with a homey feeling to it, including a spacious garden/green area for the video to end in.

The filming date for this idea will be Tuesday 3rd November - Wednesday 4th November 2015.

New Song

The song I have decided to change my idea to is "Trouble" by Halsey. I've chosen this song because it is very visual and the version I have chosen is stripped and so it's more raw than other songs. This makes it easier to create a video for the song as well as an artist to match the song.

The song is from the "Room 93" EP, which consists of 4 other songs, all of which are unstripped. This makes this song more emotional for the artist and so it would be easy to portray the emotion throughout the video.
